Manual Lymph Drainage
The lymphatic system is part of the body's immune system. It collects, transports and removes metabolic waste products, proteins, and excess fluid. Sometimes our lymphatic system gets bogged down and needs assistance. Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) when done by a trained therapist, is a safe, hands-on technique that encourages lymphatic flow in the body. It uses light, rhythmic strokes to direct excess fluid in the tissues to lymph nodes where the lymphatic and venous systems can continue to remove it.
MLD has numerous benefits. It enhances immune system function. It helps the body to recover from surgery and injuries by reducing bruising, swelling, pain and inflammation; it minimizes scar tissue formation, speeds healing, and is overall, a very relaxing treatment.

MLD and Cancer Treatment:
MLD is used in the treatment of secondary lymphedema, stages 1 and 2. Lymphedema is an accumulation of fluid in a limb or the torso, due to the lymphatic system being overwhelmed. Cancer treatment is the most common cause of secondary lymphedema. Lymph node removal, surgery, radiation, scarring or chemotherapy can disrupt lymph movement. If you have had any of these treatments but do not present with lymphedema, you are considered "at risk" or stage 1; if you experience swelling in a limb, but can relieve it with elevation, you are at stage 2. MLD is a preventative and a maintenance therapy for these stages of lymphedema. For more progressive stages of lymphedema, you will need to seek a therapist who is trained in Complete Decongestive Therapy.

What to expect in a MLD Session:
An MLD session is done with the client unclothed and modestly draped, lying on the massage table. Because lymph vessels are superficial, located just under the skin, a very light pressure is all that is needed to encourage movement. The therapist uses slow, rhythmic strokes to push fluid in the direction of lymph nodes. MLD can induce a very relaxed, sleepy state, and afterward, the need to urinate. Follow up with hydration to flush the system.
Please note: There are certain medical conditions where increased lymph flow is harmful, such as certain heart conditions, acute infections, acute thrombosis and malignant tumors. There are other contraindications that will be evaluated on an individual basis.
